Transforming public
spaces from inadequate
to extraordinary
Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.
— Jane Jacobs
Placemaking is turning a neighborhood, town or city from a place you can’t wait to get through to one you never want to leave.
Everyone has the right to live in a great place. More importantly, everyone has the right to contribute to making the place where they already live great.
I end, then, in praise of small spaces. For a city, such places are priceless.
— William H. Whyte

Founded by Fred Kent and the late Kathy Madden in 2018, the Placemaking Fund is a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation that seeks to achieve large-scale social and environmental change through placemaking. Through its own strategic program initiatives and collaborative partnerships with other funders and organizations, we foster vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable public spaces for all.

The Placemaking Fund sponsors two main programs that build on our board and staff’s nearly 50-year record of success at Project for Public Spaces:

A network to accelerate placemaking for global impact

Please note that, as an operating foundation, we primarily invest in our own programs and rarely provide direct grants to outside organizations. We do not accept unsolicited proposals.
